Barcelona ranks amongst the most competitive cities in the world and continues to position itself as one of the most attractive places for business, jobs and living.
Its global competitiveness has propelled it to the TOP 20 worldwide cities ranking, according to the Global Power City Index 2021.
Barcelona is the 18th in the world and 7th in Europe for global competitiveness, ahead of European cities such as Brussels, Vienna, Frankfurt or Dublin, and North American cities such as Toronto, San Francisco, Chicago or Boston.
The report produced by the Japanese Mori Memorial Foundation, together with the participation of prestigious universities and think tanks, evaluates and scores the capacity to attract people, investment and companies. It compares a total 48 global cities, based on a total of 60 indicators divided into six categories, by areas of urban competitiveness (economy, research, cultural interaction, habitability and environment).
The Barcelona’s strengths that are most valued are its livability, the cultural interaction and the accessibility of transport.
Barcelona is third in the world in the category of livability. This category evaluates aspects such as the unemployment rate, labour flexibility, the price of rent and basic products, security or life expectancy.
As well, Barcelona is the 14th for cultural interaction and the 16th for accessibility. The first evaluates the cultural and tourist dynamism of the cities, with indicators such as the number of tourists and international conferences they host or the hotels and museums they have, while the second evaluates their connection, both within the same city through its infrastructures and with the rest of the world according to the international flights they receive.
Some other categories position the Catalan capital as the 26th for the environment, 29th for the economy, and 34th for R+D, rising in the rankings for livability and the economy compared to 2020.
