Barcelona: Europe’s Rising AI Powerhouse

Barcelona has long been celebrated for its culture, architecture, and quality of life. But in 2026, the city is earning a new reputation: one of Europe’s most compelling destinations for artificial intelligence companies, talent, and investment. The numbers back it up, and they’ve grown significantly since just a few years ago.

A Global Lider in AI Attraction

According to IBM’s Global Location Trends 2025 report, Barcelona ranks #1 in the EU and #3 worldwide for attracting foreign direct investment projects in artificial intelligence, behind only London and Singapore. That is a remarkable position for a city that, not long ago, was seen primarily as a lifestyle destination for international companies.

This recognition reflects a broader shift. Barcelona is no longer just competing for tech talent; it is actively shaping the AI landscape across southern Europe, drawing startups, research institutions, multinationals, and investors in equal measure.

Investment at Scale

The financial signals are unmistakable. In 2025, Barcelona’s AI startups raised €115 million in venture capital, a figure that reflects growing confidence from both European and international investors. Zooming out, Catalan startups as a whole secured €1.131 billion in total funding in 2025, an 8% increase year-on-year and the third-strongest result on record.

The momentum had already been building: 2024 saw a 42% increase in VC funding in Barcelona, reaching €1.8 billion, with AI and cleantech leading the charge. AI and blockchain startups accounted for 35% of total VC investment that year, signalling a structural shift in where smart money is going.

At the national level, the picture is equally striking. Spanish startups raised €3.1 billion in venture capital in 2025, with AI emerging as the single most-funded sector, attracting €717 million in investment across the country.

World Class-Infrastructure: The BSC AI Factory

Perhaps the most transformative development for Barcelona’s AI ecosystem in recent years is the establishment of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) AI Factory, one of only seven such facilities selected across the entire European Union.

Launched in April 2025, the BSC AI Factory gives European startups, SMEs, researchers, and industry players direct access to the computing power needed to train large AI models and develop advanced applications. With a total budget of approximately €129 million, half of which is funded by the EU’s Digital Europe Programme, the facility covers sectors including health, climate, finance, legal, energy, communications, and the public sector.

And more is coming. A major upgrade to MareNostrum 5, the BSC’s flagship supercomputer, is underway, with installation scheduled to begin in early 2026. The enhanced system will incorporate state-of-the-art capabilities specifically tailored for the most demanding AI workloads, cementing Barcelona’s position as a critical node in Europe’s AI computing infrastructure.

A Deep Pool of Research and Talent

Behind Barcelona’s rise as an AI hub is a dense network of universities, research centres, and technology institutions that few European cities can match.

The University of Barcelona ranks #1 in Spain and #23 in Europe for artificial intelligence, while the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) is consistently recognised as one of the continent’s leading institutions for computer science and AI. The Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) rounds out a trio of world-class research universities driving innovation from within the city.

These institutions do more than produce graduates; they generate companies. 308 startups active in the Catalan ecosystem are spin-offs from universities and research centres, a figure that underlines the depth of the pipeline from academic research to commercial application.

The ecosystem also supports livelihoods. Catalan startups now employ more than 30,500 people, a 34% increase, reflecting the sector’s growing role as an engine of economic growth.

Looking Ahead

The foundations Barcelona has put in place in infrastructure, talent, investment, and policy position it not just as a European contender, but as a global player in the AI economy. The city that hosted the world’s largest mobile technology congress for years is now writing the next chapter: as a place where AI is not just discussed, but built.

For companies looking to enter or grow in Europe’s AI market, Barcelona deserves serious consideration.
